On March 26, the Moon appears very close in the sky to the Beehive Cluster, a famous open star cluster. This is called a close conjunction in astronomy. It doesn’t mean the Moon is physically near the cluster in space they only appear close from our viewpoint on Earth.

2. About the Beehive Cluster

The Beehive Cluster, also known as Praesepe or M44, lies in the constellation Cancer. It contains hundreds of stars that formed together from the same gas cloud. The cluster is about 577 light-years away from Earth and is one of the nearest open star clusters which is why it appears bright and noticeable.

3. Why the Moon passes near it

The Moon travels along the ecliptic, the same general path the Sun and planets follow. Because the Beehive Cluster lies close to this path, the Moon passes near it several times each year. When the timing is right, the Moon appears almost inside the cluster in the sky.

During this event, the bright Moon will sit next to the faint star cluster. The cluster looks like a small hazy patch of tiny stars while the Moon appears large and bright with visible craters. Depending on the Moon’s phase, its brightness may partially wash out the faint cluster stars.

The event can be seen with the naked eye in dark skies but binoculars are ideal. With binoculars you can clearly see dozens of stars in the cluster surrounding the Moon. A small telescope can also show the cluster stars sparkling near the lunar disk

The Beehive Cluster has been known since ancient times. Greek astronomers like Ptolemy described it as a “little cloud” of stars. In many cultures it was used as a test of eyesight because people with good vision could see it without optical aid.

When the Moon moves near clusters like the Beehive Cluster, it creates a beautiful astrophotography opportunity. The contrast between the bright Moon and the dense group of stars produces a visually striking scene in the night sky.
