Sparks on the Red Planet: Perseverance Rover Confirms Martian Dust Devils are Electric

NASA’s Perseverance rover has just confirmed something scientists have suspected for decades: The “Dust Devils” of Mars aren’t just swirling wind—they are crackling with electricity.​

For the first time in history, audio recordings from the Red Planet have captured the sounds of electrical discharges (sparks) and mini-sonic booms coming from these Martian twisters. What Did Perseverance Hear?​

On September 6, 2025, while exploring the Jezero Crater, the rover’s navigation cameras spotted three dust devils spinning near the rim. But the real breakthrough came from the SuperCam microphone.​

As a dust devil passed over the rover, the microphone didn’t just hear the wind; it picked up the “snap” and “pop” of electricity.

​The Data: Since 2021, SuperCam has recorded 55 distinct electrical events.​The “Bullseye”: Sixteen of these events happened when a dust devil moved directly over the rover.​

How Does It Work? (The Science of Static)​

Baptiste Chide, a planetary scientist on the team, explains:”On Mars, the thin atmosphere makes the phenomenon far more likely… the amount of charge required to generate sparks is much lower than what is required in Earth’s near-surface atmosphere.”
