Human Lunar Return Missions Under NASA’s Artemis Initiative

1. NASA Prepares for Humanity’s Return to the Moon

NASA selected SpaceX’s Starship Human Landing System (HLS) to transport two astronauts from Orion in lunar orbit down to the Moon’s surface. They will spend several days conducting scientific experiments, testing new equipment and exploring regions previously untouched by human explorers.

4. Building the Gateway: A Lunar Basecamp in Orbit

Beyond the first landing missions, Artemis includes construction of the Gateway, a small, crew-tended station in lunar orbit. The lunar South Pole is a prime target for exploration because of its permanently shadowed craters which may contain water-ice. If confirmed and accessible, this resource could support life-support systems and be converted into rocket fuel a critical step toward long-term lunar habitation and future Mars missions.
